THE

THE 7TH USED BOOK FESTIVAL CONTINUE AND THE ATTENDANCE IS GREAT

Feb 27, 2020

The activities of the 7th Used Book Festival, which SCHS is organizing under the theme (Get a book, Light a path) at Al Nakheel Park on the shores of Khalid Lake, Sharjah until February 29, as part of the activities marking Sharjah as World Book Capital, continue for the second day. It witnessed great attendance of school students and community members.

The students of Sharjah Public School, Al-Basayer Private School, and Al-Shula Private School for Girls presented artistic, literary and informative acts on stage.  Festival visitors interacted positively with it.  Moreover, there were a group of cultural and artistic workshops such as ‘Theatrical Art’, ‘Children's Book Breaking’ ‘Little Writer’, ‘Storytelling’, ‘calligraphy’, and ‘Coloring’ Workshops etc.

Sharjah Municipality has a participation with a special pavilion called (Al-Warif Library).  Sheikha Kholoud Al Mualla, Director of Document Management, has confirmed the importance of participation by receiving school students in the library, allow them to read stories, then ask questions and give some motivational prizes.

Sharjah Municipality is displaying, through its library in the festival a number of quotations for His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, about the importance of books and its exhibits for the civilizational and cognitive structure of men and society.

Quotations for the Ruler of Sharjah

We quote, “Book fairs are sources of knowledge that must be developed and nurtured, and in this shall people compete”.  “Books are like a garden full of flowers.  There are books that are references, and there are books make you want to search and look for information.  There are books that are just enjoyable to read”.  “We are trying to find, translate and deliver books. We hope to find someone who reads. Reading is a habit that every parent should raise his children on and make this a habit. He should work to provide books to them like food and shelter”.

As the Used Book Festival is a destination for volunteers, more than 250 volunteers from schools, universities, public and private organizations and SCHS are volunteering in sorting and pricing books as well as assisting visitors in finding the books they are looking for.

The festival is special because of the provision of a special corridor for people with physical disabilities who use wheelchairs, as SCHS was keen to make the place accessible for everyone, including the elderly and mothers who accompany their children using baby strollers.  It is a profound message to society aiming at facilitating the participation of persons with disabilities in public events.

The presence of persons with disabilities and their voluntary participation in the festival and accompanying activities is an opportunity to highlight their capabilities in several creative and artistic fields in addition to being an informative message to promote their inclusion in society. In addition, this is an effective role in serving society intellectually and culturally through recycling books in a voluntary manner.

A million book

The used book festival, which Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services has been organizing since 2006, includes this year one million books.  It is indeed a great opportunity to buy books at reasonable prices starting from two up to twenty Dirhams.  SCHS is going to allocate the revenues of the festival to support its services, programs, and activities offered to persons with disabilities.

Visitors confirm year after year that the Used Book Festival is one of the most important cultural events in Sharjah that aims to encourage voluntary work and provide books at low prices.

On the evening of the first day of the festival, a number of the Syrian residents in Sharjah presented a folkloric show that made great impression on visitors.  As for tonight, a number of residents from India would present special act.

Notably, the activities of the 7th Used Book Festival would continue until February 29, every day from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  Please join us.  We sincerely thank you.
