JAMILA AL QASIMI APPOINTED TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE INTERNATIONAL TAEKWONDO FEDERATION

Her Excellency Sheikha Jamila bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) has been making enormous efforts to advocate the rights of persons with disabilities in all fields, including sports locally, regionally and globally. Therefore, the Chairman of the International Taekwondo Federation Dr. Chungmun Choi appointed Her Excellency to the Board of Directors of the International Taekwondo Federation. This happened within a meeting for the International Taekwondo Federation held virtually on Thursday, November 4, 2021.

Her Excellency's appointment to the Council comes due to her effective role in the regional and international sports movement. She was assigned as a member of the Council and as the President of the International Para Taekwondo Council since 2017, and later the membership was extended.

The Board of Directors of the Federation includes thirty-seven members from around the world. The president elected and appointed them. The United Arab Emirates received two chairs in the new term. Members of the Council nominated and elected Brigadier Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi as the President of the Emirates Taekwondo Federation.

The vision of the International Taekwondo Federation is to promote Taekwondo for all and contribute to health, inclusion, sustainability and peace in the world.

The Federation also seeks to develop and grow the sport of Taekwondo around the world and provide the opportunity for everyone to play, watch and enjoy the sport regardless of age, gender, nationality, religion, race or ability. In addition, it promotes global principles of peace and sustainability and inspiring the powerless through education and strengthening partnerships with organizations and international associations.

The Federation is keen to promote sports to empower refugees and people with disabilities through humanitarian and inclusive programs organized in developing countries and refugee camps around the world.

Thus, Her Excellency Sheikha Jamila bint Muhammad Al Qasimi directed her sincerest thanks to the Chairman of the Council, Dr. Chungmun Choi, for the continued trust. Special thanks went to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the Federation and Ruler of Sharjah, for his continuous support for the sport of persons with disabilities. This has enabled athletes in various international forums to achieve highly, which the state is proud of in front of international organizations.

His Highness’s directives to pay attention to the sport of persons with disabilities have been on SCHS’s priority list since its inception. Her Excellency Sheikha Jamila bint Muhammad Al Qasimi supported the sport of persons with disabilities, starting with the establishment of Al-Thiqa Club for the Handicapped in May 1987. Moreover, she chaired the first International Special Olympics Committee in December 1989, while continuing to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities in the sports field through its membership and presidency of international and regional organizations.

Providing a stimulating and supportive environment for athletes has motivated them to achieve outstanding achievements that raised the country's name in the most important local, regional and international championships.

Her Excellency also called on community institutions and individuals to support and encourage inclusive and accessible sports for all. This would enhance the concept of quality of life for the community, promote a healthy lifestyle and achieve social sustainability.
