Jamila Al Qasimi: Towards responsible and humane creativity In the era of artificial intelligence
As Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS)'s Al Manal e-magazine approaches its thirty-ninth year, Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, SCHS's president and editor-in-chief of "Al Manal," stated in the editorial of issue 404 of May 2025 of the esteemed and prominent publication:
“Our passion and pursuit of sustainability and development remains continuous and keeps pace with modern developments while maintaining the general trends and vision of the magazine in serving people with disabilities and society. On this occasion, we highlight the most prominent features of our current era, and call for a meaningful and responsible discussion about the role of electronic writing and artificial intelligence in improving the quality of life and work, and using these tools intelligently and humanely”.
She added, “In a world where technological development is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, we find ourselves facing new challenges and difficult tasks! Electronic writing and artificial intelligence are among the most important of these challenges. Electronic writing and artificial intelligence are no longer futuristic concepts, but rather have become a reality that we live on a daily basis, forcing us to reconsider our methods, our ability to adapt, follow rapid development, and improve our skills in production and thinking”.
The editor-in-chief of Al-Manal explained: Electronic writing and artificial intelligence are tools that can greatly affect our lives while improving their quality, as electronic writing can affect the way we write, while artificial intelligence can affect the way we work and improve the performance of our tasks! It is therefore important that we make use of electronic writing and artificial intelligence in a responsible manner. We must use these tools in a way that serves our interests as required.
The head of SCHS has stressed that electronic writing has contributed to facilitating access, editing ideas, and accelerating publication, while artificial intelligence has provided unprecedented opportunities to analyze data, provide creative suggestions, and help us accomplish tasks more efficiently.
She pointed out that this progress is not without challenges and responsibilities! Excessive reliance on technology may weaken the human sense, reduce the role of the critical, creative mind, and reshape our ways of thinking and expression. It has become difficult to determine who holds the rights to content, and legal questions have begun to appear about copyrights, which requires updating systems to protect creativity in the age of artificial intelligence.
She said, “These tools cannot be considered merely assistive technologies, but rather partners in the process of creativity and development! We must all take the following questions seriously: How can artificial intelligence change the way we write and help us improve it? What are the benefits of using it? What are the challenges facing its use in electronic writing? How can it affect culture and society?
In conclusion, Al-Manal’s editor-in-chief welcomed the discussion of these ideas through serious articles on these questions, via the magazine’s email. almanal@schs.sharjah.ae Or the magazine's social media accounts.
