SCHS CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Under the theme  'Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post-COVID-19 world',  Al-Wafa School for Capacity Development of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) organizes from 6 to 14 December 2021 the activities of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The school wants to listen to their aspirations and rights in a world characterized by inclusiveness, accessibility, fulfillment and effective consultation with them and with the organizations that represent them.

on Monday, December 6, students of Knowledge International School, Montessori Nursery and Emirates American School participated in the activities of the opening ceremony, along with their colleagues from SCHS. The ceremony witnessed a performance by the military band of the Police Academy at the General Command of Sharjah Police. In addition, there was an entertaining art show by the Japanese Drum Band.

The Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah Heritage Institute and Al-Nahda Women's Association also participated in the inclusive ceremony through various workshops for students.

Ten beautiful paintings created by Al-Wafa School students were present in the exhibition accompanying the day's rich and varied activities. In addition, the school organized a sensory workshop on severe and multiple disabilities.

Dr. Samia Muhammad Salih, Director of Al-Wafa School for Capacity Development, has confirmed the importance of celebrating this occasion annually to raise community's awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities to education, inclusion, empowerment, and self-advocacy

She said, “Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services is keen to consolidate the principle of inclusion based on its leadership in including, advocating and empowering persons with disabilities. It calls on all individuals and institutions to realize the deep meanings of this principle and work accordingly in order to achieve more success and progress for society”.

She explained that the activities of the International Day of the Disabled would include many programs, lectures and activities. It included the dialogue session between persons with disabilities from inside and outside SCHS, which Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Complex hosted at ten AM, to talk about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, their parents and workers during the COVID 19 pandemic and the importance of raising community's awareness about inclusion.

As for SCHS Physical and Occupational Therapy Center, it organized an open medical day for students of the Masarat Center for Development and Empowerment. A range of specialties such as (orthopedics, nerves, dermatology, ophthalmology, dentistry, general medicine) performed medical examinations in cooperation with the Saudi German Hospital in Sharjah, NMC Hospital and Life Pharmacy.

SCHS branch in Kallba organizes the virtual forum for services provided to people with disabilities targeting government institutions in Kallba city at half past ten on Wednesday, December 8. Ajad Hall in SCHS will host a lecture on dealing with people with physical disabilities targeting employees of sports clubs in Sharjah. On Thursday, December 9,   Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Complex will witness at 10:00 AM a dialogue session. It would be for the workers of centers for people with disabilities. Its title is "Addressing challenges with the aim of rebuilding."

At the same time, Al-Thiqa Club for the Handicapped will organize an exhibition game in handball between the youth team at Sharjah Sports Club and the Parents' Council at Al-Wafa School for Capacity Development in cooperation with the Sharjah Sports Council.

On Thursday, December 9, SCHS Branch in Al Dhaid city, in cooperation with the Al Thameed Ladies Club, is organizing events and recreational informative activities at Al Thameed Women’s Park.

SCHS branch in Khorfakhan is also organizing a series of activities within the Al Rafisah Dam Restroom, with the participation of volunteers from acting teams, the Brotherhood Council, self-advocates, students of the branch and parents, to celebrate the International Day of the Disabled. On next Wednesday, Dr. Hanan Ibrahim Mahmoud, a Nutritionist, will deliver a lecture entitled “Food Health for Persons with Disabilities”, in cooperation with East Hospital.

Dr. Samia added, “Al-Wafa School for Capacity Development will organize at 10:00 AM on Sunday, December 12, a dialogue session with families of people with disabilities, hosted by Sharjah Cultural Palace. The conclusion of the activities of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities would be on Tuesday, through the Zoom app. It is a lecture on the stereotypical view of persons with disabilities targeting Public school teachers”.
