SCHS CELEBRATES WORLD PHYSIOTHERAPY DAY

Under the theme (Chronic Pain), the Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy, which is an affiliate of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), celebrated World Physiotherapy Day in order to raise awareness about the crucial contribution this profession makes in keeping people well and independent.

Therefore, the department launched three initiatives.  The first initiative is (Be Strong).  The second one is (We Care for your Health).  The third initiative is (Ask a Specialist).  Parents and SCHS employees benefited from these initiatives.

Ms. Fareza Mahmoud Abu Sarees, Head of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Department, has confirmed that the department's work started in the 1980s as part of Al Wafaa School for Capacity Development. As for the work at the Early Intervention Center, it started in 1994. The department started working independently at the beginning of September 1999.

Abu Sarees pointed out that 508 registered and unregistered children with disabilities benefited from department services during the last academic year with an improvement percentage up to 82%.  She said, “The department measures recovery rates by using specified international standards”.

“The department offers regular therapy services such as evaluation, reevaluation, and assessment for the need of assistive technology as well as physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions.  It also provides consultation and guidance in regard of therapy as well as the services of follow-up, consultation, training, and supporting sessions for caregivers.  In addition, the department trains students with disabilities on day-to-day activities and use treatments such as riding, swimming, and hydrotherapy”, added Ms. Fareza.

She said, “The department also offers a range of supportive activities, including wet wrap therapy, electrotherapy, music therapy, physical and supervised training, specialized medical consultation, follow-up, and supportive classroom visits”.

To conclude, Ms. Fareza pointed out that SCHS Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Department will continue offering the service of training.  It will continue to raise employees, students, and society members’ awareness in order to achieve the best results according to the best practices worldwide
