Jan 16, 2025

This morning, Thursday, January 16, 2025, over 4,000 male and female students from Sharjah schools joined their counterparts from Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) for the sixth session of the prestigious "Childhood Thon" event, which was hosted by the SCHS's Early Intervention Center on Flag Island in Sharjah. To promote integration and awareness as well as the development of productive collaborations between SCHS and community organizations, the event featured numerous sporting events and activities, including a disability simulation.

In addition to spreading the culture of accepting differences, offering support when necessary, and treating people with disabilities with respect and appreciation, H.H. Mona Abdul Karim Al Yafei, Director General of SCHS, has confirmed that one of the most important goals of this awareness-raising sports activity is to integrate people with disabilities into society and educate various segments of society, especially school students, about their rights and capabilities.

She said, “Praising the high turnout and response from schools and their students, "Childhood Thon 6" guests and students can gain a greater understanding of people with disabilities and a greater desire to integrate, advocate for, and empower them by participating in "Disability Simulation" exercises and competitions”.

She also expressed her gratitude for the important involvement of the guest of honor, Egyptian tennis player Anwar Al-Kamouni, founder of the Hope Givers Global Initiative, and the prominent participation of several celebrities from Sharjah Sports Club and Sharjah Sports Council, who helped to encourage more students to attend Childhood Thon's competitions, sports, and awareness events by signing shirts.

The Director General of SCHS expressed her profound gratitude and appreciation to the following organizations during her honoring with Mr. Mohamed Fawzy, Director of the Early Intervention Center for Sponsors, Partners, and Supporters: Sharjah Police General Command, Sharjah Sports Council, Sharjah Sports Club, Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, Sharjah Center for Voluntary Work, Sharjah Private Education Authority, Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, Flag Island, and Dubai Islamic Bank. In addition to Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bank of Sharjah, Souq Al Jubail, Zulal Water, Golden Loaf Foundation, Al Surour Bakeries, Beit Al Khabbaz, Al Kalha Restaurant, IFS Facilities Management Services Company, Al Rawabi, Al Rabia Al Khadra, and Khubzah.

Ms. Mona also expressed gratitude to the Early Intervention Center team, SCHS staff, and all the volunteers for attending the event, overseeing even the tiniest organizational details, and making Childhood Thon 6 a success. She also wished them ongoing success and advancement.

Deep informative messages

The champion, "Anwar Al-Kamouni," expressed his gratitude to the amazing organization of Childhood Thon 6 and said he was thrilled to be able to join SCHS's students with disabilities and their peers without disabilities for the second time. He said, "Childhood Thon's deep informative messages within its sports activities are worthy of celebration and praise due to its interest in integrating people with disabilities and educating members of society on how to deal with them, appreciate their capabilities and energies, and support them in various fields."

Al Kamouni expressed his gratitude to Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, President of SCHS, Her Excellency Mona Abdul Karim Al Yafei, Director General of SCHS, and all the experts, educators, and staff in this admirable humanitarian organization, explaining that the partnership between Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services and the Hope Donors Campaign will see more events, activities, and awareness and community initiatives in the future.

Continuous success

More than 4,000 male and female students without impairments, along with their fellow SCHS students, have confirmed their participation in the sixth session of Childhood Thon, according to Mr. Mohamed Fawzy, Director of the Early Intervention Center. This suggests, if nothing else, how well the event has worked in its prior iterations and how profoundly it affects each participant's soul.

He said, “Members of society must take part in supporting the access, integration, education, and acquisition of rights for people with disabilities, who deserve respect, gratitude, support, and assistance”.

Fawzi emphasized that around 130 volunteers from the Sharjah Voluntary Work Council, schools, and SCHS helped oversee the "Childhood Thon," and as in past sessions, their professionalism and commitment were crucial to the session's success.

“More activities involving as many kids as possible took place on stage during this edition of Childhood Thon, and special attention was paid to having students and visitors compete in sports that resemble disability”, added Mr. Mohamed Fawzy.

Mr. Ahmed Hassan Mirza, Coordinator of Awareness Programs at the Sharjah Center for Voluntary Work, which is connected to the Department of Social Services, responded by affirming that the center is eager to take part in the different events and activities that SCHS requests and that the current collaboration between the two parties is beneficial to society and individuals with disabilities.
