SCHS ORGANIZES A TRAINING COURSE TO PREPARE PARA TAEKWONDO TRAINERS

Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) organized the first training course to prepare Para Taekwondo instructors in cooperation with the Council of People of Determination in Dubai Police, the Emirates Taekwondo Federation and the UAE Paralympic Committee.  SCHS organized this training course on Saturday and Sunday, December 28 and 29, 2019, at Dubai Leadership Development Center with the participation of a large number of trainees. Several specialists in the field delivered many lectures.

The two days course included the definition of Para Taekwondo as an international sport, its classification, players’ categories, and laws related to their safety in a manner that guarantees equal opportunities for all players.

The first day of the course included five lectures. Mr. Abdul Quddus Muhammed, a Taekwondo Expert at the Emirates Taekwondo and Karate Federation and member of the Council of People of Determination in Dubai Police, introduced the definition of Para Taekwondo as a form of Taekwondo sport for persons with disabilities. He explained the groups that can exercise it, its basics and plans for this sport in the country, especially after its approval as an official sport in the semi-Olympic Games in Japan for the year 2020, and Paris for 2024.  Her Highness Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of SCHS, has become the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of International Para Taekwondo.  She confirmed that Para Taekwondo contributes to support the comprehensive inclusion of athletes with disabilities and provides opportunities for them to participate in tournaments in line with their abilities and capabilities.  Mr. Abdul Quddus also spoke in his second lecture in the first day about the classification of persons with disabilities in this sport and their training methods.

Mr. Yahya Fahd Kabbani, a Specialist in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, delivered three lectures in the first day in which he discussed the types of disabilities that can practice Para Taekwondo, especially for players with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and amputation.  He talked about common injuries, avoiding and treating them, the therapeutic role of Para Taekwondo for persons with disabilities and means to communicate with people with intellectual disabilities.

In the second day of the course, Dr. Basem Hamid delivered two lectures in which he talked about intellectual disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder, its causes and symptoms. Mr. Muhammad Ishaq delivered the third and final lecture in which he addressed the subject of arbitration in this sport.

At the end of the course held on the afternoon of Sunday, December 29, specialists confirmed the importance of supporting and encouraging Para Taekwondo teams to qualify and participate in international competitions and raise the physical and mental capabilities of youth with disabilities by creating a base of competent trainers for this type of sport. SCHS gave Certificates of Acknowledgements to trainers, supporters, as well as participation certificates to the trainees.
