(YOUR ZAKAT TO SUPPORT OUR EDUCATION) IS ONGOING THROUGHOUT THE HOLY MONTH
Throughout the Holy Month, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services continues its annual Zakat campaign under the slogan (Your Zakat to Support our education). The city relies in its campaign on the fatwa issued by the Permanent Fatwa Committee in the Emirate of Sharjah that permits the collection, acceptance and giving zakat money to people with disabilities with the aim of paying tuition fees for those who are financially unable and providing the latest technologies to support their education in accordance with international best practices.
The city is keen to spend the Zakat funds annually according to Islamic Law through a committee of specialists with experience in the field from inside and outside the city. This committee studies the economic situation of the families of students with a disabilities and decides precisely who is entitled to the zakat money.
Mrs. Khadija Ahmed Bamakhramah, head of the Zakat Funds Disbursement Committee, explained that one of the most important objectives of the committee, which the city established under the directives of Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, Director General of the City, is to determine the eligibility of disbursing the amounts collected from the zakat campaign based on Islamic Law.
The committee also undertakes the task of paying the zakat money as stipulated by Islamic law, with complete credibility and transparency to students with disabilities. The committee also bears responsibility for the sums that the city disburse.
First of all, social workers determine the cases that deserve to receive zakat money and communicate with parents about the necessary documents. Then carry out field visits according to the followed procedures and prepare studies. After that, follow-up with those concerned in the city’s departments and branches, so that finally each department official prepare and approve the final file for each case.
After that, the Zakat Calculation Committee receives the files and reviews them with social specialists, approves cases that are due for zakat. It prepares the statements related to them, up to the final approval of the city general manager. After that, the Department of Administrative and Financial Affairs takes over the steps related to it.
Students who are entitled to zakat funds benefit from it in paying their tuition fees for counseling, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, visual impairment sessions, hearing and movement aids, in addition to fees for school uniforms, breakfasts, transportation, etc.
Bamakhramah confirmed that the average cost of educating and training one student reaches at least 30,000 dirhams during one academic year. The average number of students annually benefiting from zakat funds reaches approximately (500) students.
