SCHS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY CENTER ORGANIZES ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS MONTH

Nov 27, 2019

Assistive Technology Center, which is an affiliate of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), has organized Assistive Technology Awareness Month during November 2019.  It included a group of informative workshops held at Al Wafa School for Capacity Development (Al Ramalah Branch).  Many of SCHS students, non-disabled students and their peers with disabilities in inclusive schools participated in month’s activities.

Ms. Rabab Abdel Wahab, Head of Assistive Technology Center, has confirmed that the aim of the informative month is to integrate persons with disabilities with their colleagues and introduce them to some of the devices and tools that promote greater independency.

She said, “Workshops included Robotics Designing and Programming by students of Sharjah Autism Center, the Innovation and Modification of Simple Tools for the Benefit of Persons with Disabilities, and Modifying Cars”.

Abdel Wahab pointed to the informative activity organized by the Center for the families of persons with disabilities that included many informative lectures.  One of the most important lectures was introducing Assistive Technology and the agreement signed between SCHS and Sharjah Islamic Bank, which allows persons with disabilities to finance appropriate assistive technology without fees or interest.

Rabab has confirmed that among important lectures was one about daily life skills and assistive technologies.  After that, SCHS organized a tour for parents at the exhibition organized by the Center to learn about the tools of daily life skills and assistive technologies for people with hearing impairment in collaboration with international corporations in hearing aids.

She also mentioned the consultations provided to families by the specialist Mohamed Salah about assistive technologies.  She explained that the center, which SCHS established in 2014, has offered services to more than 200 persons with disabilities inside and outside Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services.

She added, “Assistive Technology Center cares to raise the awareness of persons with disabilities and the entire community of the concepts of Assistive Technology and Universal Design.  The center has been organizing many conferences, workshops, and exhibits for this purpose since its establishment”.
