The 7th Used Book Festival.. Culture and Volunteerism

Feb 24, 2020

Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) preparations are almost over as Wednesday, February 26, 2020, approaches. It is the date for the beginning of the 7th Used Book Festival, which SCHS is going to organize as part of the activities marking Sharjah as World Book Capital with more than one million books, at Al Nakheel Park on the shores of Khalid Lake, Sharjah under the theme (Get a book, Light a path).

On the festival ground, work is taking place at an accelerated pace to complete the preparation of the gates, tents, display tables, theater, playing area and lighting poles so that everything is ready for the big event.

SCHS aims by organizing the festival to enhance the value and importance of books and encourage reading by making books available at reasonable prices starting from two up to twenty dirhams.  It also aims to enhance the value of voluntary work and provide innovative financial revenues that contribute to SCHS programs and services according to the best international practices.

Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services confirms that in correspondence to the cultural approach that His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah established, SCHS has been organizing the Used Book Festival since 2006.

Since its first year, the Used Book Festival has been depending on volunteers.  Among volunteers, there are persons with disabilities who contribute to the organization and the success of the festival, believing in the importance of knowledge and the spread of culture among all members of society.

The books that will be available in the festival are valuable and in various fields of general knowledge. People from all nationalities can visit the festival and buy books at optimal prices that start from two dirhams and up to twenty dirhams.  Books available in English are abundant in many subjects.

As customary every year, a group of cultural, social and recreational events would accompany the Used Book Festival.

Mr. Jihad Abdel Qader, the General Coordinator of the Festival, directed his sincerest thanks to SCHS Partners (Sharjah Municipality, Sharjah Police, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, and Fast Contracting).  In addition, he thanked sponsors (Tilal Properties, Dana Gas and Sisli International) and Media Partners (Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, Sharjah Government Media Bureau, Al Khaleej Newspaper, Rimal International Advertising, and Site Global).  Special thanks went to Sharjah Cooperative Society and Sharjah Old Cars Club.

Finally, the festival opens to visitors during its four days from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM.
