Jan 13, 2020

The American Para Olympic Champion John Register has confirmed that Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) contributes to the at establishment of peace and intergenerational communication and that the services provided to persons with disabilities are equal to the highest international standards and clearly indicate an effort made for an easy life for all.

He said, “It was an honor for me to join the students of Al Amal School for the Deaf and Al Wafa School for Capacity Development their classes.  I had an opportunity to learn more about the mechanisms of education and how to deal with persons with disabilities in accordance with international best practices”.

Her Highness Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of SCHS, received delegates from the Consulate General of USA in Dubai on Monday, January 13, 2020.  The delegation included the Paralympic Champion John Register, Public Relations Officer Yasmine Habrawi, Cultural Program Official Hala Abdel Rahman, and Social Media Official Omar Hatem.  They wanted to learn about the services, which SCHS offers to persons with disabilities in every area of life.

Delegation members toured SCHS, during which specialists briefed them on the progress of the educational and training process. They interacted with persons with disabilities in some classes.  They listened to a full explanation about SCHS's history and its constant leadership in advocating, including, and empowering persons with disabilities as well as integrating them into society and raising people’s awareness of their rights. SCHS has a major role in supporting the sport of persons with disabilities, starting from the establishment of Al Thiqa Club for the Handicapped in 1987. SCHS encourages students to exercise their hobbies professionally, up to the participation of athletes with disabilities in the most important local, regional and international championships, and obtaining colored medals and advanced ranks.

Notably, the cooperation between SCHS and the United States embassy in Dubai dates back to a long time. This cooperation includes many educational and training activities and exchanging visits between SCHS and a number of universities and American organizations in order to benefit from the accumulated experiences and continuously improve the services offered to persons with disabilities.

One of the best examples for this cooperation was Entrepreneurship Program for Women with Disabilities in 2012.  It aimed to empower a group of Emirati women with disabilities who wish to start their own businesses to achieve a degree of independence and reach a level of leadership in society in addition to many other activities and events in the past years.
