JAMILA BINT MOHAMMED AL QASIMI, “THE GOAL OF THE ZAKAT CAMPAIGN FOR THIS YEAR IS TO COLLECT 11,000,000 DIRHAMS

Mar 5, 2023

Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), sent her warmest congratulations and blessings on the approaching of the holy month of Ramadan, wishing to God Almighty to bring it back to the Arab and Islamic nations and all the people of the world with good and happiness.

Therefore, Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Muhammad Al Qasimi called for supporting the zakat campaign, which SCHS has been organizing since 1989 under the slogan (Your Zakat to Support our Education) during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

This year, the campaign aims to collect 11,000,000 dirhams (eleven million dirhams) to pay tuition fees for 479 male and female students with disabilities who are eligible for zakat funds in accordance with Sharia regulations.

Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services relies in its zakat campaign on the fatwa issued by the Permanent Fatwa Committee in the emirate of Sharjah that permits the collection, acceptance and provision of zakat to people with disabilities. A special committee studies the financial situation of families with persons with disabilities to determine who is really in need because they cannot make a living.  In this case, SCHS as being a nonprofit organization pays money to educate persons with disabilities.

Education is one of the legitimate sources of zakat money. Education achieves the stability of the family and provides a permanent source of livelihood. The campaign slogan that SCHS organizes annually in the holy month of Ramadan shows how the zakat money disbursed according to the Islamic Law to pay tuition fees for students with disabilities whose parents cannot afford it.

Sheikha Jamila explained that SCHS, since its founding 44 years ago, has adopted the issues of persons with disabilities in its approach, mission and vision. SCHS has been keen to educate the people of society about it, calling on them to support it and provide appropriate support in all fields. Sheikha Jamila urges them to contribute zakat funds in order to continue providing educational services consistent with the latest standards and directions.

Sheikha Jamila showed the proportions of SCHS's financial resources to cover the operational cost of providing education, training, rehabilitation and treatment services for people with disabilities. For example, the Sharjah government contributes 29%. There is 22% of zakat funds, 28% of donations and endowment management, and 21% of tuition fees and other activities.

Her Excellency SCHS’s General Director said, “Although, the average cost of educating and training one student has reached at the very least 30,000 dirhams during one academic year, the actual cost ranges between 20 thousand dirhams and 80 thousand dirhams, depending on the type of disability and the services the student needs. SCHS always seeks to fulfill its pledge and commitment to provide education, rehabilitation, counseling and family support for all.

She indicated that 1,647 people with disabilities benefited during the academic year 2022-2023 from the educational, rehabilitation and training programs offered by SCHS to its students of various nationalities and disabilities, according to the best and latest international practices.

Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Muhammad Al Qasimi directed her sincerest thanks to partners, sponsors and supporters of the zakat campaign.  They are Sharjah Islamic Bank, Dubai Islamic Bank, Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority. In addition to Nazo Corporation. She also thanked media sponsors, which are Sharjah Broadcasting and Television Authority, Rimal International Company for Advertising, Site Global Company, and to everyone who contributed zakat funds to support the city and its services.
