Nov 23, 2020

On Friday, 20 November 2020, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) Branch in Kallba launched a two-year training package on protecting persons with disabilities from abuse out of realizing the policy regarding their protection, which the Cabinet Resolution of 2019 approved.

Dr. Asma Al-Darmaki, Acting Director of SCHS Branch in Kallba, has emphasized the importance of raising awareness in this field by preparing cadres to help protect persons with disabilities and working to empower professionals who work with them through comprehensive knowledge and culture. In addition, it would provide them with the tools that would enable them to detect children who have been or may be exposed to abuse.

Accordingly, SCHS designed a training program for cadres working with persons with disabilities.  It aims at raising awareness about abuse through the preparation of conscious cadres capable of assisting and protecting persons with disabilities in addition to qualifying and training cadres in order to be able in turn to qualify and prepare cadres of the second grade and learn about training methods and techniques with evaluation and follow-up.

Among the objectives of the program is also educating workers about the laws and legislations related to the protection of persons with disabilities. Another goal is qualifying the cadres specialized in providing preventive and therapeutic services to mitigate the effects of abuse or violence while strengthening community partnership between different parties and dealing directly with persons with disabilities of all categories.

Al-Darmaki explained that in the two years program, which will start next January, the trainee would familiarize himself with persons with disabilities, forms of abuse and their implications.  He would learn about some social theories that explain violence against children, and then be able to apply strategies to prevent child abuse.

She added, “The trainee would familiarize himself with the laws and legislation on the child's right to protection, mechanisms and measures of protection, and the role of families. In addition, he would be able to support civil society mechanisms in protecting persons with disabilities from abuse and realizing the requirements of their empowerment”.

It should be noted that SCHS branch in Kallba provides its various services to students, whose number this year has reached (86) according to the hybrid education system (remote and face-to-face) while taking the utmost levels of security and safety measures. SCHS does this in correspondence to its strategic goals, which includes being a leading institution in advocating, including and empowering persons with disabilities.
