SCHS LAUNCHES ITS ANNUAL ZAKAT CAMPAIGN
Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), sent her warmest congratulations and blessings on the approaching of the holy month of Ramadan, wishing to God Almighty to bring it back to the Arab and Islamic nations and all the people of the world with good and happiness.
She called for supporting the zakat campaign launched by the city on (March 29, 2021) under the slogan (Your Zakat to Support our Education), with the aim of paying tuition fees for students with disabilities who cannot afford it and providing the latest technologies to support their education in accordance with international best practices.
The campaign slogan that the city organizes annually in the holy month of Ramadan shows how the zakat money disbursed according to the Islamic Law to pay tuition fees for students with disabilities whose parents cannot afford it. The city hopes that this year's campaign (2022) will contribute to the payment of tuition fees for 471 male and female students with disabilities.
Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services relies in its zakat campaign on the fatwa issued by the Permanent Fatwa Committee in the emirate of Sharjah that permits the collection, acceptance and provision of zakat to people with disabilities.
The city cares to spend this money on its students with disabilities who deserve it due to their need to pay for education, training, rehabilitation, and assistive technologies. A special committee studies the financial situation of families with persons with disabilities to determine who is really in need because they cannot make a living. In this case, SCHS as being a nonprofit organization pays money to educate persons with disabilities. If SCHS cannot do this, SCHS becomes entitled to take from Zakat money, because it falls under one of the seven categories entitled to Zakat money according to the Islamic law, which is those in debt on their behalf or on behalf of others.
Her Excellency the City’s General Director explained that the average cost of educating and training one student has reached at the very least 30,000 dirhams during one academic year. The city aims, through the campaign, to pay tuition fees for 80% of the total number of students in the city who cannot afford it.

Since its establishment in 1979, the city has been embracing the issues of persons with disabilities in its approach, mission and vision. The city was keen to educate the community about these issues, calling on members of society to provide appropriate support in all fields. She urged them to contribute their zakat funds so that the city continues to provide its educational services consistent with the latest standards and trends.
